Neutralize Heartburn in 30 Seconds: Simple Baking Soda Drink for Fast Relief

Neutralize Heartburn in 30 Seconds: Simple Baking Soda Drink for Fast Relief

That burning feeling creeping up your chest after a meal? The tightness in your throat that makes you regret that last bite?
If you struggle with heartburn or acid reflux, you are definitely not alone.

The good news: you probably already have a quick, natural remedy sitting in your kitchen right now.

In this post, I’ll show you how I make a simple baking soda drink that can help neutralize acid and calm that burning feeling in around 30 seconds.

This is the same method I demo in my short video on heartburn relief – if you’re a visual learner, you can watch it there too.

What Is Heartburn, Really?

Heartburn is that burning sensation in your chest or throat when stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus.

Common triggers include:

  • Eating too fast or too much
  • Spicy, fried, or acidic foods
  • Coffee, alcohol, or fizzy drinks
  • Lying down right after a meal

An occasional episode is normal for many people – and that’s where this simple, at-home remedy can help.

Why Baking Soda Works for Acid Reflux

Baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate – a natural base.
When it mixes with stomach acid, it helps neutralize the acid, which can reduce that burning sensation.

Think of it as a homemade, simple antacid without all the added ingredients.

I also like using slightly warm water because it feels more soothing going down than ice-cold water when you’re already uncomfortable.

30-Second Baking Soda Drink for Heartburn Relief

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda (aluminum-free if possible)
  • ½ cup (about 120 ml) warm water

Optional add-ons (if your stomach tolerates them):

  • Tiny slice of fresh ginger, grated – can be soothing for some people
  • A drop of raw honey for taste (avoid if it triggers you)

How to Make It

  1. Warm the water
    • Use comfortably warm, not hot. You should be able to sip it easily.
  2. Add the baking soda
    • Stir ½ teaspoon into the water until it’s fully dissolved.
  3. Optional: add ginger or honey
    • Grate in a very small piece of fresh ginger if you find it soothing.
    • Add a little honey only if sweet doesn’t trigger your reflux.
  4. Sip slowly over 30 seconds
    • Don’t chug. Sip gently and give your body a moment to respond.
  5. Stay upright
    • Sit or stand for at least 15–20 minutes.
    • Avoid lying down right after, even if you’re tired.

Many people notice the burning sensation start to ease within minutes as the acid is neutralized.

When I Personally Use This Remedy

On my own natural wellness journey, I reach for this drink when:

  • I’ve eaten a heavier meal than usual
  • I feel that early throat or chest burn starting
  • I want relief but would rather try something natural first

This is for occasional heartburn – not something I rely on every single day.

Important Safety Notes (Please Read)

Even though this uses simple ingredients, it’s still important to be careful:

  • Not for daily, long-term use
Regular, frequent use of baking soda can affect your body’s mineral balance.
  • Be cautious if you have high blood pressure or kidney issues
Baking soda is high in sodium.
  • Not suitable for everyone
    • If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication, or have chronic health issues, speak to your healthcare provider first.
    • Don’t give this to children without professional guidance.
  • See a doctor if:
    • Heartburn happens more than twice a week
    • You have chest pain, trouble swallowing, or unexplained weight loss
    • Symptoms don’t improve or get worse

This remedy is for occasional support, not a replacement for medical care.
